Flash Recovery Area

Flash recovery area is an Oracle managed directory, file system, or Automatic Storage Management that
provide a centralized disk location for backup and recovery files.
It was introduced from Oracle 10g
What is in it?
 A copy of all datafiles;
 Incremental backups;
 Online redo logs;
 Archived redo logs;
 Controlfiles;
 Copies of the control file and spfile.
Which benefit?
– Ability to flashback the database;
– Quick recovery from backups stored on disk;
– Automate management of recovery related files.
How to enable it?
SQL> ALTER DATABASE FLASHBACK ON;
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST_SIZE = 2G ;
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM SET DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST = ‘/ORACLE/DB/RECOVERY_AREA’ ;
